Do you have one of those wardrobes where the clothes tumble like an avalanche when you open the door? I did.
I’m not where I want to be in terms of a minimalist wardrobe but I’m making do with what I have and I will gradually remove and add timeless, quality pieces to build my capsule wardrobe.
A capsule wardrobe is a simple collection of clothing that do not go out of fashion. A wardrobe purge is good way to take stock of what you have and to decide whether or not you need a new article of clothing.
I’ve done a lot of research on building a capsule wardrobe but the information out there is not targeted to a Caribbean audience. Here is how a Caribbean person can begin purging their closet in order to build a capsule wardrobe.
1. Remove clothes that can’t fit you
If it doesn’t fit properly remove it. Don’t wait until you lose weight because we know that may never happen. If it is too tight or it is too much trouble to take-in get rid of it!
2. Remove clothes that you don’t like
You will know clothes that you do not like because they are clothes that you rarely wear. Anything that you have not worn in three months should be tossed out!
3. Remove damaged clothes
Anything with rips that can’t be mended, stripped zips, stains, pulled or linty articles, or clothes that are really old and discolored should be bagged.
4. Remove patterns, colors and fabrics that you don’t like
At one point did you like paisley or neon but now you can’t stand it? Also anything that feels like sandpaper against your skin should be discarded asap!
5. Remove items that you have too many of
Does a girl really need ten pairs of cardigans or five pairs of jeans? Learn to live with one article of a clothing type.
I haven’t tackled my ‘home clothes’ yet but this is what my wardrobe looks like so far. I’ve removed about 100 articles of clothing and I plan to own only 30 quality pieces one day in the future. I kept 1 cardigan, 1 pair of jeans, 6 blouses, 1 scarf, 1 sweater, 1 ethnic wear, 2 work pants, 2 work jackets, 3 tee shirts, 9 shirts, 10 dresses (casual and formal) and 8 skirts. I feel lighter 🙂
Stay tuned for The Purge II.
